The only goal of the game was scored by Peter Swan after thirteen minutes, when he scored with a dipping shot from twenty yards. The home goalkeeper may have been beaten by this effort, but he pulled off outstanding saves to keep out scorching drives from David Batty and Kevin Noteman later in the first half. While United clearly had the better of the first halfthe second half was more even with few chances for either side. Grenville Shorte replaced David Rennie at Left Half, Darren Edmonds replaced David Batty at Outside Right and Peter Maguire replaced Peter Swan at Inside Left after sixty four minutes, then Jason Longstaff replaced Neil Aspin at Centre Half three minutes later. Goalkeeper Neil Edwards and Simon Old were the unused Leeds substitutes. Referee J.T Hall (Leeds).
